KFC

Original Recipe chicken goes into a pressure fryer under eleven herbs and spices, and the seasoning has not moved since Harland Sanders settled it. KFC grew out of a roadside dining room in Kentucky into one of the largest chicken chains on earth. Buckets, tenders, nuggets, wraps and the Famous Bowl fill the board behind it, and the sides run to mashed potato and coleslaw.

KFC History below covers the service station where it started and the owners who have held it since. Yum! Brands runs the chain today, with the US head office in Plano, Texas.

KFC History

Harland Sanders sold fried chicken from a service station dining room in North Corbin, Kentucky from 1930. A pressure fryer bought at the end of that decade cut the cooking time enough to sell the dish at speed. Eleven herbs and spices settled the seasoning by 1940. Pete Harman took the first franchise in South Salt Lake, Utah in 1952. Sanders travelled the country in a white suit, signing up the operators who followed him into the business.

A group of investors led by John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack C. Massey bought the company in 1964 for two million dollars. Heublein took it over seven years later. R.J. Reynolds picked up Heublein in 1982. PepsiCo paid eight hundred and forty million dollars for the chain in 1986. The name shortened to KFC in 1991. Tricon Global Restaurants was spun out of PepsiCo in 1997 and renamed itself Yum! Brands five years later.

Plano, Texas holds the US head office, moved there from Louisville where Yum! Brands still sits. KFC trades from more than three thousand seven hundred restaurants across the United States and close to thirty two thousand worldwide. Franchisees own the large majority of the American estate. Original Recipe chicken still cooks under pressure. The bucket began as a packaging idea and became the thing the chain is pictured by more than any other.
