Dunkin’ Donuts History
William Rosenberg opened a coffee and doughnut shop in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1948. He had already sold coffee and sandwiches from a truck to nearby shipyard workers before he settled on a permanent storefront. Rosenberg renamed the shop Dunkin’ Donuts in 1950, narrowing the board to coffee and doughnuts alone. Franchising began in 1955, and the chain reached its hundredth store within the following decade. That original Quincy building still serves customers today.
Bob Rosenberg, William’s son, became chief executive in 1963 at the age of twenty-five. Allied Domecq bought the chain in 1990 and paired it with Baskin-Robbins, an ice cream chain it already owned. The two brands kept separate menus. Dunkin’ Brands formed as the parent company in 2004, based in Canton, Massachusetts, and took the company public on the Nasdaq exchange in 2011. Dunkin’
Donuts shortened its name to Dunkin’ in 2019, dropping the word that had defined it for almost seventy years. The change reflected a menu now built mostly around coffee and other drinks rather than doughnuts alone. Inspire Brands completed an $11.3 billion purchase of Dunkin’ Brands in December 2020, taking it private again alongside Arby’s and Buffalo Wild Wings. Dunkin’ now trades from more than 10,000 restaurants nationwide across 45 states and territories, with New York holding the largest share of any single state.
