Waffle House History
Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner opened the first Waffle House on September 5, 1955, in Avondale Estates, Georgia. Forkner sold Rogers the corner lot rather than building a house on it. The two settled on waffles because the iron let one cook keep pace with a full counter alone. That original building still stands nearby. A second location followed within a year, and the yellow-and-black sign soon became a fixture along Georgia’s roadways.
Waffle House expanded steadily through the 1960s and 1970s, spreading along interstate exits across the Southeast. The company set up headquarters in Norcross, Georgia, near Atlanta. Unlike most restaurant chains its size, Waffle House kept the bulk of its stores company-run rather than handing them to franchisees. Every location runs the same short, all-day menu around the clock. That habit of staying open turned into a widely cited federal gauge nicknamed the Waffle House Index. The index reads a storm’s severity by whether the nearest restaurant serves a full menu, a limited one, or none at all.
Waffle House has stayed privately held through seven decades. The founding families still hold a connection to the business, alongside long-serving executives who came up through its own restaurants. The chain now operates about 2,021 restaurants across 25 states, concentrated heavily across Georgia and the South. Scattered, smothered and covered hashbrowns remain the order of the day. A jukebox in the corner is still a fixture too, decades after that first grill went hot in Avondale Estates.
