In-N-Out Burger has run on the same six-line board since Harry Snyder opened a single stand in 1948. The chain still refuses to franchise. Beef is ground at the company’s own facilities, potatoes are cut in the restaurant, and no outside investor has ever held a share. That combination is rare enough at 442 restaurants to be the whole story.

In-N-Out History
Harry Snyder and his wife Esther opened In-N-Out Burger in Baldwin Park, California, in October 1948. The stand carried a two-way speaker box so drivers could order without leaving the car, the first drive-thru hamburger stand in the state. Harry built the box himself. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries and drinks were the whole offer, and they still very nearly are.
Esther Snyder kept the books from the first day and ran the company after Harry died in 1976. Eighteen restaurants carried the name by then. Their son Rich took the presidency at 24 and reached 93 restaurants before a plane crash killed him in December 1993. Guy Snyder followed, then Esther again until her death in 2006.
Lynsi Snyder, Guy’s daughter, became president in 2010 and took near-full ownership in 2017. In-N-Out Burger remains private, sells no franchises and answers to no shareholders. Growth runs at a few dozen restaurants a year across ten states, and Tennessee joined in December 2025. The head office sits in Irvine, California.
