Cracker Barrel History
Dan Evins built the first Cracker Barrel around a Shell gas station off Interstate 40 in Lebanon, Tennessee, opening its doors in 1969. Truckers and travelers needed a reliable stop between exits. Evins paired the fuel pumps with a full dining room and a general store stocked with hardware, candy and gifts. Rocking chairs lined the covered front porch from the start, giving road-weary drivers a place to sit before or after a meal. A checkerboard sat nearby for anyone waiting on a table.
Gas pumps disappeared from the property over the following years as the restaurant and retail side of the business grew into the main draw. Cracker Barrel leaned into a country-store identity built around wood-burning stoves and checkerboards set on old barrels. Guests still walk past general-store shelves before reaching the hostess stand. Breakfast stayed on the menu all day rather than stopping at a set hour. That habit became one of the chain’s clearest signatures among full-service restaurants.
Cracker Barrel Old Country Store went public in 1981, funding faster growth along interstate exits across the South and Midwest. Locations kept the same formula: a dining room for families and travelers, next to a retail floor selling cast-iron skillets and seasonal decor.
