Jersey Mike’s

Jersey Mike’s runs a made-to-order sub shop. Meat gets sliced fresh at the counter, dressed in a house blend of oil, vinegar and spices. More than 3,441 restaurants now carry the name across the United States. The chain grew out of one shore-town sandwich counter in Point Pleasant, New Jersey.

Jersey Mike’s own history, from that single shore-town counter to today’s national franchise, fills the section below.

Jersey Mike’s History

Jersey Mike’s traces back to a single storefront on Trenton Avenue in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Michael and Marie Ingravallo opened Mike’s Giant Submarine Shop there in 1956. They sliced meat and cheese to order behind one counter. Peter Cancro took a part-time job at that counter in 1971, at just fourteen years old. He learned the slicing, the bread rotation and the register long before he ever thought about owning the place himself.

Cancro bought the shop outright in March 1975, at seventeen, paying 125,000 dollars for the business and the building together. He pulled the financing together in three days with help from his high school football coach, who worked as a banker on the side. Running one sandwich shop through his college years taught him the operation from the register up. In 1987 he began franchising the concept, renamed it Jersey Mike’s Subs and added an outline of the Garden State to the logo.

Franchised locations multiplied through the 1990s and 2000s, crossing 750 restaurants by 2014 and topping 1,000 the year after. Jersey Mike’s now runs its franchise network from Wall Township, New Jersey, not far from where that first counter once stood. Cancro sold a majority stake to Blackstone for close to 8 billion dollars in November 2024. Charlie Morrison took over as chief executive the following April, and Jersey Mike’s now trades from more than 3,441 restaurants nationwide.
