Red Lobster History
Bill Darden opened the first Red Lobster in Lakeland, Florida, in 1968. He bet that inland diners would pay for fresh seafood shipped from the coast. General Mills bought the small chain two years later, using the deal as a test case for expanding casual dining nationwide. Locations multiplied fast through the 1970s on one simple formula. A fixed menu, a seafood case near the door and a family price point all played a part.
General Mills spun off its restaurant division in 1995. The new company took the name Darden Restaurants, after the chain’s own founder. Darden Restaurants ran Red Lobster for nearly two decades. It sold the chain to private equity firm Golden Gate Capital in 2014. Thai Union Group, a Thailand-based seafood supplier, bought a minority stake soon after. That deal tied part of the chain’s own supply directly to one of its investors, and rising shrimp costs strained the arrangement toward an exit.
Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2024, closing dozens of underperforming restaurants including the original Lakeland location. The company emerged from bankruptcy that September under new ownership. Fortress Investment Group led the new owners, working alongside the chain’s existing lenders. Damola Adamolekun took over as chief executive later that year. He came from P.F. Chang’s. Red Lobster now trades from 499 restaurants across 43 states. Shrimp, lobster and Cheddar Bay Biscuits® still anchor the menu that carried it out of Florida.
