Sonic History

Troy N. Smith Sr. took over an abandoned root beer stand in Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1953. He reopened it as the Top Hat, grilling hamburgers and hot dogs to order for whoever pulled in. A trip through Louisiana the next year put him in front of a homemade intercom rig that let drivers order from the seat. Smith had one built for his own lot, then added canopies over the bays and carhops on roller skates.

Smith and his partner Charles Pappe opened three more Top Hats before finding the name already belonged to someone else. They took their own slogan, Service at the Speed of Sound, and shortened it to Sonic. Stillwater carried the new sign first in 1959, and franchisees drove the growth from there rather than company building. Inspire Brands owns Sonic Corp today and runs it beside Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Jimmy John’s and Dunkin’.

Around 3,400 Sonic drive-ins trade across 47 states, the large majority franchised rather than company-operated. Sonic kept the stall format through every wave of drive-thru building. A driver parks under a canopy, presses a button, orders through the speaker and waits for a carhop to bring the tray out. Oklahoma City still holds the headquarters, and the Route 44 cup takes its name from the forty-four ounces it pours.
